Aviary Cleaning Protocols
“If it smells strong to you, it may harm a bird’s respiratory tract”. This is a good rule-of-thumb when selecting chemicals and implementing cleaning protocols for a single bird cage to a large aviary environment. Although it has been traditionally thought that birds lack in the olfactory department, it has been shown that many birds do detect aromas and use them to some degree to select mates, forage for food, and locate nesting spots. Some birds, such as vultures, seabirds, and parrots have well-developed olfactory glands, giving them more of a sense of smell and taste.
Some chemicals can have a lingering effect, long after smell has faded, so it is important to keep the environment well-ventilated.
Our goal is to develop protocols to reduce cross contamination and the spread of infectious agents. provide products, techniques and protocols that are designed to reduce a bird’s negative reaction to the cleaning and sanitation process, while at the same time providing effective solutions.

SHOE (BOOT) BATH SANITIZER DIRECTIONS:
To prevent cross contamination from area-to-area place a bath containing one inch of freshly made sanitizing solution at the entrance to the building and between rooms.
- Mix 1-ounce of Animal Facility Disinfectant per 1-gallon of water (or equivalent use dilution).
- Fill bath with at least one inch of prepared solution.
- Scrape off heavy soil.
- Stand in bath for 1-minute prior to entering area.
A fresh solution must be prepared daily or when the solution becomes visibly dirty.
AVIARY CLEANING PROTOCOLS
NOTE: For large, multi-bird cages, use a foam gun applicator or pump sprayer to apply the solution. For heavily soiled surfaces use a solution of STABLE Environment Enzymatic Cleaner to preclean the surface, before implementing the disinfecting process.
CAGE CLEANING & DISINFECTING
To minimize the migration of chemical sprays and vapors, when cleaning single bird cage surfaces, we recommend using wet wipes in place of traditional spray bottles. If spray bottles are used, set the sprayer setting to course/stream.
- Prepare the Refillable Wiping Canister (please see instructions on page 3).
- Remove bird(s), food and water dishes from cage.
- Remove solid waste, bedding and other loose debris.
- Wipe down surfaces including perches, play structures, etc..
- Scrub surface using a synthetic brush (see page 3)
- Allow solution to stand for 10 minutes.
- Use a wet sponge or cloth to remove any heavy moisture and emulsified soil.
- Allow surfaces to air dry before returning birds to the cage.

Floor Cleaning & Disinfecting Protocol
The following process is for use on vinyl tile floors, vinyl replica wood floors, Terrazzo floors, ceramic tile floors, and sealed concrete floors. Always place a Wet Floor Caution Sign before starting the mopping process.
- Sweep or vacuum floor to remove loose soil or dirt.
- In a mop bucket, mix 1-ounce of Animal Facility Disinfectant per gallon of water.
- Using a clean and dedicated mop head, start from the back of the room and walking backwards, work the cleaning process to the exit door. (DO NOT WALK BACK OVER THE PREVIOUSLY MOPPED SURFACE!)
- Allow the solution to stand for at least 10-minutes.
- Allow the surface to air dry before being reused.
- Thoroughly rinse the mop head and hang to air dry.
NOTE: For heavily soiled floors, or unsealed concrete floors pretreat using a solution of STABLE Environment Enzymatic Cleaner and water, scrub if necessary and then rinse the floor before implementing the disinfecting process.
EXTERIOR HABITATS (Mews, Chickens, Peacocks, etc.)
Exterior habitats are built using porous materials such as wood, dirt, stone and other substrates, so we recommend using STABLE Environment Enzymatic Cleaner as the daily or primary cleaner.
- Remove birds from the primary area.
- Pickup and discard solid waste, soiled bedding, etc..
- Use a foam gun applicator, or in a bucket or pump sprayer mix 2 to 4-ounces of STABLE Environment per gallon of water.
- Apply the solution to all surfaces including perches, rocks, platforms, flooring and all other bird touchpoints.
- Agitate surface to loosen embedded soil.
- Allow the solution to stand for 3-5 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly.
Here’s a real exterior habitat.
NOTE: If the birds can not be removed during the cleaning process, we recommend using a foam gun applicator to apply the solution in order to minimize the migration of the chemical vapors.

Safety Notice:
- Always wear protective gloves when using cleaning chemicals.
- Always wear protective goggles when applying cleaning solutions above eye level.
- Use Wet Floor Safety Signs to avoid dangerous slip and falls.
- Wash hands thoroughly after completing the cleaning process.
